The River Dender
The Celts called this river 'Tanara' or 'Tanera', which means 'the restless one' or the 'the seething one'. Indeed, before it was canalized and the tidal lock in Dendermonde was built, the Dender was an unreliable river, on which the tides of its 'master' the Scheldt still had a substantial impact.
Autumn and winter floods went together with the whims of this beautiful, yet tempestuous lady. Nevertheless you cannot but marvel at the beauty of its thick banks.
The small hand-operated locks and tilt bridges are an attraction not to be sneezed at.
To put it shortly, a must see.
