Round trip by boat on the river Scheldt from St-Amands.
The picturesque small towns on the river Scheldt attract many day
trippers. Sidewalk cafés are tempting and restaurants offer delicious
meals in a pleasant atmosphere. Stewed eels in chervil sauce is
the main local dish. Footpaths on the banks of the Scheldt are suitable
for a pleasant walk or bicycle ride in the summertime. Time of departure for this round trip is 3:00pm. Place of departure is St-Amands, the native town of poet/writer Emile Verhaeren. More than anybody else he described the majestic river Scheldt. Together with his wife he is buried in a tomb on its bank.
The Scheldt is still called the 'Zeeschelde' (Sea Scheldt) here, because it is directly connected with the sea, thus making it subject to the tides. The area where the Flemish television series 'Stille Waters' was shot will be explored. The boat will sail past Baasrode and the 'Kramp', a horseshoe bend on the Scheldt, up to Dendermonde, where it will return. Arrival in St-Amands at 4:30pm.
