A tale of two cities ! Between 1551 and 1561, Mary of Burgundy authorised the excavation of the canal between Brussels and Antwerp. This intervention made it possible to cover the distance between Brussels and Antwerp in one or two days instead of eight or ten days of sailing along the Senne. Today, we are repeating this trip ! Although now we are not sailing for two days but for six hours!
The intercity boat trip between Brussels, Vilvoorde and Antwerp remains a unique experience. We cruise on the Sea Canal and on the river Scheldt.
The Sea Canal from Brussels to the Scheldt is one of our country's most economically important transport arteries. But it will soon become clear to you that the Sea Canal has many tourist-recreational assets in addition to its economic function. Once past Vilvoorde, we sail in the rural Green Belt passing marinas and water sports clubs and the 'Noordelijk Eiland' nature reserve, a habitat for water and wading birds.
Before sailing up the mighty tidal Scheldt and mooring at Antwerp, we experience the passage through the lock of Zemst and and the impressive sea lock of Wintam/Bornem.
You return on your own initiative, by train.
For groups, a guided walk between Steenplein and the Central Station can be organised on request (+/- 35 min. walk)
